Company Profile – Practical Science Laboratory

Who We Are
Practical Science Laboratory (PSL) is an education organisation dedicated to transforming theoretical knowledge into practical experience. Our mission is simple: true understanding comes from practice. We bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world application by creating opportunities for students to engage directly with cutting-edge science and technology. Founded with the belief that science should be both accessible and actionable, our mission is to cultivate curiosity, critical thinking, and a sense of purpose in the next generation of innovators.

Our Approach
We design and deliver project-based learning programmes that challenge students to apply their physics, astronomy, and engineering knowledge in hands-on contexts. By connecting students with professionals, researchers, and real-world projects, we enable them to experience first-hand what it means to work at the frontier of science and innovation.

Our Track Record

  • Educator Seminars June 2025: We convene teachers and education practitioners in physics and astronomy to explore new teaching methods and foster collaboration.
  • Student Seminars August 2025: We bring together high school students to meet experts, learn from role models, and get inspired by real stories of space exploration and satellite building.
  • Upcoming Competition September 2025: PSL will host its first Mission Proposal Competition (Submission opens on 01 September 2025), challenging students to design a mission for a real 3U CubeSat. This marks the first step towards our long-term goal: empowering New Zealand students to design, build, and launch their own satellites.

Our Next Chapter
From 2026, PSL will deliver a year-long Satellite Building Programme, where student teams will learn each stage of constructing a CubeSat. With full technical support provided by our organisation, students will be able to incorporate their own creativity, whether in function or design, into a satellite that will ultimately be launched into space.

Why It Matters
Similar initiatives have already succeeded overseas, such as TJHSST’s CubeSat project in the United States. PSL is bringing this opportunity to New Zealand for the first time, giving our students the chance to:

  • Apply high school science knowledge in real-world contexts
  • Collaborate in teams on ambitious, technically challenging projects
  • Contribute to New Zealand’s growing space capabilities
  • Witness their own satellites launched into orbit

Our Commitment
We handle the technical backbone, project organisation, and mentorship, so that schools and teachers can focus on supporting students without taking on additional workload. Our programmes are designed to be mutually beneficial collaborations between schools, students, and industry partners.

Our Vision
To make space exploration and advanced science accessible for young people in New Zealand, and to inspire the next generation of scientists, engineers, and innovators.
